Black Betty

Now, Black Betty is heartworm negative and ready for a new home. She has been through alot, but seems to appreciate her new "leash" on life. She is in a wonderful foster home until she is adopted, and she gets along great with children and other dogs. She is ... housetrained, which is a wonderful thing, because Betty loves to be whereever her family is--inside or out. She has been vaccinated and the vet has given her a clean bill of health. Her favorite thing to do is chase tennis balls.

In this interpretation, Black Betty's baby may be the prisoner himself, who has by his own admission "gone crazy" -- seeing as it was "Black Betty" who delivered the prisoners into the prison world ("She's bringing some po' sucker"). In the lyrics above, the phrase "Let your hammer ring" is used repeatedly. In this case, the "hammer" refers to the hoes used by prisoners to break up the ground in the cotton fields. The song itself was used to keep a steady rhythm among the workers as they toiled in the field. It had the added benefit of helping the time go by faster through collective participation.

Black Betty has undergone big changes over the past 3 years. Drive problems have always plagued this bot but things are looking more promising. A stronger drive train and the addition of a 42 cc gas engine to drive the weapon will make Black Betty a much more competitive middle weight competitor.

"Although Black Betty is popular with locals, it's easy to miss. The only sign out front says Don Diego's (a remnant from the previous tenant, a divey nightclub). The transition from divey club to divey bar seems to have been pretty smooth. The space's new decor, with its gold arched ceilings and votive candles, seems to aim toward Moroccan but ends up more reminiscent of a Mexican bordello. You can spot a couple of tough characters from the Don Diego days among the boys and girls with bike messenger bags dancing to the jukebox, tunes which lurch unpredictably from Bratmobile to Barry White to tango. The bartender serves strong mixed drinks for $3.75 a pop, and by two in the morning the crowd emits a happily drunken hum. The whole effect is more sleazy than anything else, but not unpleasantly so. Black Betty features live performances most of the week (jazz, funk and lounge on Mondays; "Garbage Night" on Tuesdays [see below]; rotating DJ's on Wednesdays).

Eight years standing, Black Betty continues to attract an eclectic crowd with their daily lineup of live music including Brazilian Beat Sundays, Friday and Saturday night DJ's, and Reverand Vince Anderson and his Love Choir every Monday eve. Black Betty ... serves a menu of Mediterranean flare with a falafel-platter entree (more than enough food for two), first-rate vegetarian offerings, and Moroccan-style couscous with spicy merguez, beef or chicken will appease carnivorous appetites. After dinner, cool your palate with a refreshing mojito, margarita, or Brooklyn Lager and retereat to the bar. Things will just be warming up.
