The topic is emotional in that parents are understandably deeply upset when they learn that their child has a serious birth defect. Many parents feel that medical science should be able to prevent, or at least identify in advance, all possible birth defects. They often feel that someone is at fault. Mothers might blame themselves. They might feel that they either did something that caused the defect or that they failed to do something that could have prevented it. This is almost never the case.

In Westerville, Ohio, another infant was born with heart defects to a mother who was prescribed Paxil during pregnancy and required two life-threatening surgeries during the first nine months after birth. The child is scheduled for an additional surgical procedure next year.

Environmental chemicals such as fungicides, food additives, and pollutants are suspected of causing birth defects, although this is difficult to prove. Exposure of the mother to high levels of radiation can cause small skull size (microcephaly), blindness, spina bifida (a malformation of the spinal cord), and cleft palate. How severe the defect is depends on the duration and timingof the exposure.
