Children born with an omphalocele often have other types of birth defects, such as improper closure of the spine (spina bifida). Although the underlying cause of an omphalocele is unknown, the authors suggest that the development of an omphalocele may share some common developmental pathways with other types of birth defects.

Children with significant birth defects need more medical care than other children do, require more frequent hospitalizations, need community support services, and often require special education programs. Among children, over half of all visits to subspecialty medical clinics and admissions to hospitals are for treatment of disorders resulting from errors in embryonic development, chromosomal abnormalities, and genetic and familial disorders. Fauza said he is puzzled that no one before him proposed using fetal cells from amniotic fluid to fix birth defects. He first raised the idea when he was training at Children's in the mid-1990s, inspired by a baby boy born with a normal heart except for one grave problem: It had developed completely outside his body, and his chest was too small to enclose it. Doctors tried to cover it with skin grafts, but they did not work well and the baby died of massive infection.
