Bird Feeders: Squirrels

Hopper Bird Feeder - Many people will begin their wild bird feeding experience by hanging a “hopper-type” bird feeder. You'll recognize this type of wild bird feeder because of it's platform base, side-walls and a roof forming a “hopper” that holds the wild bird seed. A hopper bird feeder attracts most of your wild bird feeder birds. Although not totally weatherproof, the side-walls and roof of the hopper bird feeder helps protect the wild bird food from inclement weather. However, this type of wild bird feeder will not keep the pesty squirrels away! Hopper bird feeders can be hung from a hanging hook or mounted on a post or bird feeder pole.

The key is to divert the attention of squirrels away from bird feeders. Squirrel feeders are often designed to have a table and chair with a nail coming from the top of the table. A squirrel will sit down and enjoy their feast just as the feeder suggests. The nail can easily accommodate a C&S Squirrelog (the favorite food of squirrels) or an ear of corn, but the problem with an ear of corn is that it does not last long (a squirrel can polish off a complete ear of corn in about a half an hour or less). The C&S Squirrelogs are produced with compressed Sweet Corn and offer more food and entertainment value for the dollar. One Squirrelog equals 20+ ears of corn.

Squirrels have the size, strength and the intelligence to take over any unprotected bird feeders, so a feeder that can use their own size to repel them is a great innovation. These squirrel proof bird feeders are battery powered, and the motor is activated by the heavier weight of the squirrels. When the squirrel comes and sits on the perch its own weight triggers the perch to spring shut. This closing action can send the squirrel flying through the air. After the squirrel has left and his weight has gone, the feeder opens up again.

Squirrel proof bird feeders are more expensive than the traditional hopper feeder; ... if squirrels are a problem, you might just want to consider one. They come in a variety of styles to discourage the squirrels. The grid type has a platform that the birds can dip their beaks through to pull out seed while the squirrels cannot reach in with their (in comparison) larger paws. There is also the “flipper” type that flips the squirrels off the bird feeders. Another type actually works using an adjustable weight sensitive perch. When the heavy squirrel (or large unwanted bird) lands on the perch, the door to the bird food closes.

This position may help to keep your bird feeders safe, at least for a little while. Unfortunately this is unlikely to last for very long, and you will probably have to resort to tricks like keeping black oil sunflower seeds in a pile some distance away from your feeder. However, no matter what you try and whatever tricks you use, the squirrels will eventually find where you've kept the bird feeder and they'll begin to eat again. A specially designed squirrel proof bird feeder maybe just what you need.
