Bird Feeders: Seeds
built 605 days ago
Bird feeders can be suspended from nearby trees, even a wash-line, or supported by posts or poles; seeds ... can be tossed on the ground. Feeders should be cleaned regularly to ensure the health of visiting birds. In addition, feeders should be placed away from windows - especially picture windows - to limit bird injuries; birds cannot see glass and often fly into it. Placing feeders near cover - by shrubs and trees - also will provide safety from Cooper's and sharp-shinned hawks, which stake-out feeders. Vegetation also provides dining perches for seed-busting songbirds.

There is nothing more relaxing than sitting in your favorite Adirondack chair and watching the birds come to the bird feeders for a snack. However there is a good amount of care to be given to the feeders in order to have the birds visit. For birds to visit your feeding stations, the feeder must be attractive to most species and is easy to make. Called a platform feeder, it consists of a 2-foot square of half-inch of marine wood plywood. With a hammer, tack moulding strips around the edges to prevent seeds from falling off and attach the entire thing to the top of a cedar post at a level you can reach easily--but at least 30 feet off the ground. Treat the feeder with oil-based stain and rub the wood with a metal sponge to remove excess; let the feeder age outside for a few days before stocking it so no paint will absorb into the seed and make the birds sick.

There are many different bird feeders that will suit the eating habits of your garden visitors. Ground feeders are the most optimum for birds like Doves, Goldfinches, Cardinals, Juncos, Towhees and Sparrows. These Audubon bird feeders need to be kept in open areas, at least 10 feet away from any trees and shrubs. This way the birds will have a good chance of fleeing from any incoming danger. The feeder is designed in a way that keeps the seeds fresh by separating the bird droppings from the seeds. Sometimes the ground feeders will have covers over them.

Bird feeders have proven to be a major attractant for urban bears. In Juneau, problem bears have been shot, and necropsies revealed bellies full of bird seed. Although the small seeds seem like an unlikely draw for a bear, bird seed is high in protein and fat, and is very appealing to bears.
