Bionicle

Two words that sum up Bionicle are hybrid creativity. With each new player you command follows completely new ways to explore the world. From gliding, flying, surfing, skiing, and battling, every turn provides a different endeavor. Even with specific characters, Electronic Arts really worked hard to create creative challenges, monsters, and interactive levels.

The Bionicle (Biological Chronicle) was a long story told by and about bio-mechanical beings. It spanned hundreds of thousands of years and took place on an unknown planet. All the landforms on said planet were divided into various islands with all extremes of climate and civilization. It was primarily about the Toa, the Matoran, and their adventures. Most beings in the Bionicle wore Kanohi, or "masks" that augment them with power. Elements were manipulated by all beings for constructive--and destructive--use.

Bionicle puts the elemental powers of the Toa at your fingertips to battle the forces of evil. Summon blasts of fire, ice, water, stone, earth, and air in six island environments. With Toa energy, you can snowboard down Mount Ihu, surf through lava rapids, and race through Pohatu's desert. Your path takes you through jungles, mountains, and lakes, and ends in Makuta's lair. It's up to you to defeat the evil spirit and stop his Bohrok from devouring all of the island's resources.

Bionicle 2 tells the story of six Matoran robots who are recruited to save the city of Metru Nui. These robots are miniature workers who serve their city with jobs such as mask making, archiving, and constructing tools. Toa Lhikan comes to these six industrial workers and gives them each a stone so they too can become Toas and save Metru Nui (“Toa” is a title given to a robot when they receive new powers and abilities). All six of the Toa druids join forces to collect sacred disks, overthrow evil leadership, and save their island city.

Bionicle is aimed at the kids who are buying the toys, so experienced gamers probably won’t find much challenge here. For example, although each character carries a sword, a set of axes, or another dangerous-looking object, you use those weapons as guns—easily blasting bad guys with a convenient automatic-aiming feature. For kids with intermediate gaming skills, Bionicle requires little more than a few hours to finish.

The story of Bionicle is a science fantasy set in a world that is inhabited predominantly by biomechanical (part-organic, part-machine) beings. This world and its multiple races was once protected by a Great Spirit named Mata Nui, but he has since been cast into an unnatural sleep by the evil Makuta, and the universe has begun to decay.
