Biomes: World
built 253 days ago
Biomes are a crude way of classifying the ecosystems of the world. Their very size is ... their most severe weakness. They lack precision and many parts of the world do not fit comfortably into one biome type or another. The world is almost infinitely complex. Biomes are an extremely useful concept but are not very good at dealing with the particular problems or characteristics of specific ecosystems. In addition no two ecologists are able to agree on a standard list of biomes.

Biomes are simply environments that have some things in common. Their climates and the organisms that live in them are similar. Grouping environments into biomes helps scientists to study and to better understand the natural world. On this page you will find out about some of the biomes of the world, what makes them unique, and what kinds of creatures call it their home.

A number of attempts have been made to classify the world's biomes. One of the best known was proposed by the Russian-born German climatologist Wladimir Koeppen (1846–1940). Some of the biomes described by Koeppen are described below.
San Francisco has one of the most unique biomes in the world. With its low average temperature, and long winters, Mark Twain has been quoted "the coldest winter that I have ever known was a Summer spent in San Francisco. Flora and Fauna species are not unique, but the fact that species normally know to overrun native species do not seem to do this in San Francisco.
Upwelling regions are relatively deep, nutrient-rich areas that sustain highly productive biomes. Among the large variety of species included in such biomes are fish and shark, marine mammals, and birds such as gulls. Upwellings off the west coast of South America and in the Antarctic Ocean provide some of the human world's most abundant fisheries.

Some ecologists have identified about 11 different biomes in the world. However, generally speaking, 7 are agreed upon. The reason for the disagreement is that there is a zone between biomes where one blends into the other, and some ecologists think these zones are ... separate biomes.
