As with seashores, coral reefs are those rare oceanic biomes affected by latitude; in fact, this type of biome appears only in tropical regions. The principal characteristic of the coral reef is its substrate of calcium carbonate, formed from the exoskeletons of dead coral polyps and other creatures. On this structure is built a highly productive biome in which coral, algae, fish, and invertebrates (animals without a backbone) thrive.

Temperature is the major influence on the biomes discussed above. Because temperatures decline with altitude as well as latitude, similar biomes exist on mountains even when they are at low latitudes. As a rule of thumb, a climb of 1000 feet is equivalent in changed flora and fauna to a trip northward of some 600 miles.

Latitude is a major climate-influencing factor determining biomes. There is a good correlation between the distribution of climates with latitude, and homogeneous vegetation bands.
