Billy Gilman first earned a name for himself singing on the Asleep at the Wheel segment of the 2000 George Strait tour. But he burst onto the national music scene a few weeks later with his show-stopping performance at the 2000 Academy of Country Music Awards show, where he earned a standing ovation. "It was a life-altering experience," the then 11-year-old told music legend Dick Clark backstage.

Billy has appeared on national television programs including The Rosie O'Donnell Show, Oprah, The Tonight Show and The Today Show. He's ... appeared as presenter or performer at some of the industries most renowned awards shows such as the CMA Awards, the TNN/Country Weekly Awards and the American Music Awards and he earned a prestigious Grammy nomination (losing out to the legendary Johnny Cash).

Having parted ways with Epic-parent Sony, Gilman is said to be weighing opportunities with several labels. "I can't wait to get back in the studio and make new music," he says. "Even though I'm still very young in this business, I feel that my experience over the last five years will help me make the best record of my career."

Gilman says he's ... gotten a dose of perspective from his family. Many young musical acts are managed by their parents, and at first glance it may seem as though that's a good way to keep normalcy in a talented kid's life. Gilman, who is home-schooled and tutored and about to start 11th grade, sees it the opposite way.

In 2001, Billy earned four Billboard Music Video Awards, including Best New Artist in three categories (Country, Jazz/Adult Contemporary and Contemporary Christian) and Best Video in the Contemporary Christian category. He won the American Music Award for Favorite New Country Artist, became the youngest artist to be nominated for an Academy of Country Music Award and starred in his own television special.
