GLENDALE, CALIFORNIA -- Billy Barty, the diminutive entertainer who turned the ability to spin on his head into a seven-decade career in show business, died on Saturday, December 23 at the Glendale Memorial Hospital. The 3-foot, 9-inch actor had been hospitalized since November 30, with heart and lung problems. A memorial service was held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in North Hollywood, where Barty was a member.

A giant of the entertainment world at only 3’9” tall, Billy Barty looked up AT most of his fellow actors, but most of them looked up TO him. Billy Barty began performing at three, and began making motion pictures in 1927. He played Mickey Rooney's little brother in the "Mickey McGuire" comedy shorts series. He appeared as a child actor in numerous classic films, including Alice in Wonderland, A Midsummer Nights’s Dream, Daddy Long Legs, Footlight Parade, Roman Scandals, and Golddiggers of 1933.

Billy died in the Glendale Memorial Hospital of heart failure Saturday December 23, 2000 at 9:22am. He was married to Shirley, and had a daughter named Lori and a son named Braden. Merry Christmas.
In a eulogy delivered on December 27, Billy’s brother-in-law, Wesley Morse said, “Billy appeared in over 200 films in the 70 years of his career. A remarkable body of work. In addition, his vaudeville years, his television credits, commercials, stage roles, and nightclub appearances, made him among the most prolific of all performance artists.
