Bill Hicks, born in Georgia, came to his life's work early. As a kid, he memorized Woody Allen routines. He did his first gig at 13. He stumbled through high school; college wasn't even a thought. At 18, the “road years” began. From the beginning, he mixed brutal political and social analysis with potty-mouth rants.

William Melvin Hicks, better known as Bill Hicks (December 16, 1961–February 26, 1994), was a controversial American stand up comedian, satirist and social critic. Hicks is often compared to Lenny Bruce (although he frequently denied knowing much about Bruce's life or work) and Sam Kinison (a contemporary and friend). Comedian Richard Pryor figured largely as an inspiration and stand-up idol for Hicks, as did Woody Allen, who ... served as an influence for Bill at an early age. Hicks was well known for his misanthropic rants and his hatred of consumerism.

When he was young Bill wanted to be Woody Allen, buying his records and stealing his jokes. At his first stand up gig, a church camp talent show in Houston, Bill did Allen's joke about breastfeeding by a woman with falsies. "People laughed, then looked at me like I was the antichrist." It was an early indication that Bill Hicks had no time for a didactic morality.
