Bill Hicks: Great Britain
built 229 days ago
Bill first travelled to Britain in 1990 for "Stand Up America!" in London. Hicks' sense of irony and sarcastic manner went down well on these shores, and a lot of his anti-patriotic acts found a connection he had never had before. "People in the United Kingdom and outside the United States share my bemusement with the United States that America doesn't share with itself. They ... have a sense of irony, which America doesn't have seeing as it's being run by fundamentalists who take things literally."

Bill positively loathed corporate manufactured pop. The idea that pop stars could endorse products was, to him, the exact opposite of what pop music was about. It should be about rebellion and creativity. He expounded a theory that there was a positive link between drug use and musical creativity. Consider the drugged up rock greats - Hendrix, Elvis, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones. Now consider the modern day pop artists. Who made the better music1?

Actually, in Garth Ennis’ comic series “Preacher,” the eponymous character has an encounter with Bill in a flashback, citing him as the reason he stopped being such a drunk and a hypocrite. He congratulates Bill for a great set, and Bill replies, “Thanks. Hey, you’re a preacher!”
