[K]now that Bill Hicks remains an elusive person upon whom his fans project that which they want to see. To some, he was a brilliant social satirist; to others, he was simply a foul-mouthed juvenile. Both contain a germ of truth. But whether you think of him as comedy’s answer to Kurt Cobain or the funniest person never to attain household name status, know that the closest you’ll ever get to knowing Bill Hicks is on the disc enclosed here.
If, for some reason, you weren't already aware, Bill Hicks actually died about 10 years ago. In the last year that he was alive, he recorded enough material for two 2Pac-style posthumous albums, this one, a sort of weird mixture of comedy and music that was supposedly intended to be a sort of "comedy Dark Side of the Moon" and the next one, which I'll write about tomorrow that's really frickin' awesome.
Bill Hicks saw the thin veneer beneath the thin veneer. He wanted better. And the way to get to better, he believed, was through sermons intended to knock audiences of lame sinners back in their seats so they'll finally realize they're not just going to hell, they're living in it right now. And maybe then they'll get off their asses and do something. Comedy? Not quite.

London snapshot Shortly after graduating high school, Bill moved to LA to start the first phase of his love/hate relationship with the city. Performing alongside then-unknowns Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld, and Gary Shandling, Bill found the going rough. After two years he had had enough and returned to Houston. Although his experience in the heart of the showbiz beast had been disappointing, Bill remained enthusiastically dedicated to stand-up comedy. He began touring, relentlessly, building asmall but loyal base of fans.

DEAD means never having to say you're sorry. Bill Hicks is this comedy guy who’s dead now. He was a big mouth on the stand-up circuit, had an HBO special, a teevee show in the UK, a new album on the way, a bit on his ideologically-confrontational routines in The New Yorker, and it sure looked like he was on his way to something like success. But then he got cancer and died (or maybe was "MIBed" by the thought police) so in a few years you can pretty much guarantee that no one will remember him at all.

Billy Boy You see, Bill Hicks never faked it, which can not be said for 99.9% of anyone else in the entertainment business. He stood his ideas against popular thought and made everyone listen. Bill made comedy out of issues that other stand-ups wouldn’t even attempt. Common topics included Desert Storm and drugs. And he got away with it. Stupid people laughed at their own stupidity. Ha Ha!
