Bill Hicks: Bill Hicks Live
built 199 days ago
Part of the problem around the Bill Hicks legend is the CDs themselves. Basically, you either like the artsy-fartsy approach this stand-up comic had to his comedy CD releases that included useless musical segues and an insistence on not working on the recording in the studio to equalize the sound and all. The theory was you should hear his set as he performed it live without any sound adjustments (the reality was Hicks never really bothered bring the mike close to his mouth unless he felt like screaming in it). This was definitely a theory as you cannot then explain how the hell the music got in there. So, as far as CDs go, aside from Philosophy: The Best of Bill Hicks pretty much everything else is a pass because of all the annoying artsy crap around them.

Born in Valdosta, Georgia, Bill Hicks was the son of Jim and Mary Hicks, and had two elder siblings, Steve and Lynn. The family lived in Florida, Alabama, and New Jersey before settling in Houston, Texas when Bill was 7. He was drawn to comedy at an early age, emulating Woody Allen, and writing routines with his friend Dwight Slade. His parents took him to a psychoanalyst at age 17, worried about his behaviour, but the psychoanalyst could find little wrong with him.

Although comedian Bill Hicks passed away in 1993, his legacy lives on as one of comedy's greatest talents. This release combines some of his best work, including the following live performances: "One Night Stand" from Chicago, "Revelations" from London and "Relentless" from Montreal. Also included is a bonus featurette, "Just a Ride," which covers Hicks's career and features testimonials from Brett Butler, Jay Leno, David Letterman and more.

The life of Bill Hicks was brief, but full. As Kurt Cobain, James Dean, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Marilyn Monroe, among many others, Hicks lived hard, died young and left a lasting image. That’s good show business. These days, it means heirs have a revenue stream.

Bill Hicks was regarded as one of the greatest comedians that ever lived by those who saw him. Unfortunately is his home country of America he was virtually ignored. He made a much bigger splash in the UK and was scheduled to have his own television show on British TV when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Comparisons were made with Sam Kinison and Lenny Bruce during his life, but neither are really true. He was more brains than Kinison and funner than Bruce. One of the greatest comedians who ever lived.

Bill Hicks was born William Melvin Hicks in Valdosta, Georgia, on December 16, 1961, to Jim and Mary Hicks. His father was an executive at General Motors, and his mother was a teacher; he had two older siblings. Hicks’s family lived in Florida, Alabama, and New Jersey before settling in Houston, Texas, when Bill was seven years old. By the time he was thirteen, Hicks was on stage in Houston nightclubs on open-mic nights, and by 1978, he had become a regular performing member of the Houston Comedy Workshop, often appearing with his friend Dwight Slade. In his senior year of high school, Hicks moved to Little Rock (Pulaski County), but shortly after graduation in 1980, he moved to Los Angeles and embarked on a stand-up comedy career.
