Bill Gates: People
built 237 days ago
Bill Gates was on hand at the British Library's special Windows Vista launch event earlier today to tell all the pretty British peoples about his pretty new operating system. He spoke about the history of the Windows operating system, from its beginning 24 years ago as a DOS extending operating environment that borrowed heavily from Apple, to today's standalone multimedia powerhouse that borrows heavily from Apple.

Bill Gates remains the iconic technologist, entrepreneur, and business leader of his generation. He invented the software industry, masterminded the rise of the PC, and has hung in there as a force on the Internet. Still intent upon transforming how people work and communicate, now Gates is pushing software to handle all aspects of office communications, from your phone to e-mail to instant messaging. His software powers smartphones and will show up soon in television set-top boxes. And he has hooked up with upstarts like Facebook to channel the energy and advertising potential of social networks.

(Remember what happened to Bill Gates when The New Yorker ran his e-mail address? After averaging about one message a day from outside strangers, he suddenly found himself dog paddling hopelessly against a tsunami of 5,000 unread messages and had to change his address.) So why did Seth Godin (sgp@sgp.com) publish E-Mail Addresses of the Rich & Famous, a list of nearly 1,000 people categorized under headings such as "Experts," "Authors," "Celebrities," and "The Richest Americans with E-Mail?" Godin claims his book will give "regular people" the opportunity to chat with people "who can wield some influence." I e-mailed eight people listed in the book and asked them how they felt about being included in E-Mail Addresses of the Rich & Famous.

The Bill Gates will be installed at various venues as it is completed. People will be invited to come and participate in the installation by helping to assemble and arrange the individual gates. People are welcome to contribute their own bills during these installation festivals, but all contributed bills will become part of the piece and will not be returned. These installation festivals will be documented with video and still photography.

Bill Gates is regarded by many people as a genius; as a software god. But if the rumors about him are true, he is a retard. This in turn would explain his life, which appears to be nothing more than a futile struggle to find happiness. He may have a fantasy that money and fame and that stuff that people refer to as “power” will bring him happiness and cause people to love him. But no matter how much money he gets, he is still the same miserable, introverted, spastic person. No matter how much money he gets, he is still a social misfit.
