Bill Cosby: People
built 229 days ago
Cosby has made so valid points - but he has ... blamed the victim. Low income families of any color live in a cycle of deprivation that "individual responsibility" alone cannot break. When a group is powerless, a rage builds that lashes out - unfortunately the truly powerless have little reach so they end up attacking within the boundaries of their own homes and communities. To the outside uneffected observer it may appear to be irrational and just plain stupid when in fact it speaks volumes about the level of desperation within the group that they will hurt their own. Positive messages have to be presented but there must be more or it just becomes another urban legend. Maybe Cosby will piss off enough people that block by block groups might come together to make change.

In his sophomore year, Cosby left school to pursue a career in comedy. In 1963, after appearing on The Tonight Show, Cosby's popularity soared. In part, his success was a result of his comedic style. Although the country was experiencing racial turmoil, Cosbys comedy focused on the humor of everyday situations common to all people.

Cosby's critics may be gentler in their rebuke of him because he's their political bedfellow. Their quarrel with him though is very much ideological. They may be loathe to admit it, but like black conservatives, Cosby has apparently grown tired of the worn-out notion that until the last vestige of racism is eradicated black success is impossible and any success black people do attain is either the result of luck or the benevolence of others.

The 66-year-old Cosby struck an introspective tone. "There is a time, ladies and gentlemen, when we have to turn the mirror around," he told the crowd of 500 people at the Sheraton hotel.

If you listen to Cosby's comments at the NAACP commemoration of Brown v. Board of Ed on audio, you realize that his comments were funny as well as laceratingly honest. The audience is with him all the way. The media coverage afterward seems more like a conditioned response to a previous stimulus; they repeat the comments but find little outrage. Perhaps because people are sick of lying to each other and themselves. Maybe there's a good story in that.
