The program will begin at 3 p.m. with introductory remarks at the Holler Fountain in the Stetson Quad, followed by a bike tour of several sites in DeLand. The public is invited to attend the ceremony and join in the bike ride. Participants are encouraged to bring their own bikes and helmets, as there will be a limited number of Green Bikes available for the tour.

What started as a one-time event became a tradition the next year when the New York City Mayor Ed Koch embraced the idea of a city-wide bike tour. The distance was shortened and the word "challenge" was changed to "tour" to make the event more appealing to the general public. That year, the number of participants increased tenfold to around 3000.
