Bhangra: Traditional Bhangra
built 615 days ago
Bhangra is a traditional, high-energy dance with its roots in the north Indian state of Punjab and Pakistan. Historically, Bhangra was performed by farmers in celebration of a good harvest. More recently, Bhangra has reemerged as an explosive dance style that has become very popular throughout North America and around the world.

The Bhangra dance itself is a couplet form of dance with the woman dressed in traditional Indian wear called Salwar Kameez and the man in a Punjabi suit with a colorful turban on his head. The steps are mostly identical, with the woman mirroring the man’s steps.
Bhangra has gained mainstream popularity, attracting producers and artists such as Madonna, Britney Spears and Craig David. It is still performed in a traditional fashion but has ... evolved into a new form of fusion Bhangra, where Bhangra music has been remixed with various other forms of music including Bollywood, R&B and hip-hop - and is listened to by people of all cultures around the world.
Traditionally, men wear a lungi while doing Bhangra. A lungi is a colorful piece of cloth wrapped around the waist. Men ... wear a kurta, which is a long Punjabi-style shirt. In addition, men wear Bhugaris - also known as turbins - to cover their heads.
