The birthplace of Bhangra, the Punjab is a region extending over part of Northern India and Northeastern Pakistan. Translated, the name "Punjab" means the "Land of Five Rivers." The people of the Punjab are called Punjabis and they speak a language called Punjabi. The three main religions in the area are Sikhism, Hinduism, and Islam. The region has been invaded and ruled by many different empires and races, including the Aryans, Persians, Greeks, Muslims, and Mongols. Around the time of the 15th Century, Guru Nanak Dev founded the Sikh religion, which quickly came to prominence in the region.
Bhangra in the Gym Bhangra became one of the trendiest of fitness and exercise routines, and it fast emerged as a popular alternative to regular aerobics among Americans, winning rave reviews from the fitness gurus. "Balle balle, Hadippa," the chorus chants breathlessly, as sweaty and bouncing exercisers move to the rhythm of the latest workout in aerobics exercise.
This year, 23 of the best teams in the country applied to perform at Pao Bhangra, with only six receiving invites. The lineup included mixed Bhangra teams from New York University, Virginia Commonwealth, Northwestern, George Washington, Columbia and SUNY Geneseo.
