Bhangra: Bhangra Club
built 615 days ago
Since its launch in 1997, Basement Bhangra™ has forced New York to sit up and take notice of Bhangra, rapidly making the outsider art-form an essential part of the NYC club scene. Although Basement Bhangra™'s success is built on loyalty to the sensibilities of it's core audience, the 1st Thursday of every month finds S.O.B.'s over-flowing with a crowd that comes in every shape and color. The monthly event and the international Bhangra phenomenon it helped spark have received extensive attention from national and international press, making the cover of Billboard magazine, features on Dutch and Japanese television, and most recently on the WB11 News at 10.

Bhangra began as a part of harvest and vaisakhi festival celebrations, and found its way to the performance stage after the division of the Punjab in 1947. The Punjabi dance performed at this time in ecstasy with the beat of Dhol came to be known as Bhangra. The tradition spread slowly to other parts of the region and developed into a unique folk dance form. Bhangra has come of age and is now performed at every major celebration and in clubs etc.
Several different organizations have made it possible for the Bhangra Club to hold classes, acquire music and costumes and lately, compete. We especially thank MIT Council for the Arts, MIT Association of Student Activities, MIT Finboard, NetSAP, Innovative Moves, Boston Business Journal, India Association of Greater Boston, McCormick Hall and residents, BNN TV's "It's All About Arts", Sangam, Sloan, and the MIT Media Lab for their support.
