Bhangra is an upbeat, energetic, and vibrant folk dance from North India, Punjab Region. Traditionally done to celebrate the harvest, Bhangra can now be seen at any and all festive occasions celebrated in India particularly weddings. It's perhaps the most vigourous forms of South Asian Dances, but ... the most free spirited, down to earth, and fun. The main instrument is a large barrel size drum called the dhol. Its hypnotic beats are so contagious and can lure even the most dedicated of wallflowers onto the floor. Bhangra is a such a joyous form of dance that you will be engulfed in its spirit of celebration as soon as you experience it.

Bhangra is infiltrating American pop culture and attracting an increasingly diverse set of devotees. Artists like Jay-Z, Missy Elliott and Mariah Carey in her latest album have incorporated the bhangra beats into their work. The music originated in the Punjab region of northern India and eastern Pakistan at least 600 years ago and was performed by entire communities during the harvest season. The bhangra is similarly accessible to groups of partygoers today.

Basement Bhangra has become a monthly celebration at the Manhattan nightclub Sounds of Brazil, known as SOBs. Started by the DJ Rhekha Malhotra, who is known for mixing hip-hop tracks with South Asian beats, the event has popularized the lively Punjabi folk music and dance known as bhangra in New York and beyond. In Seattle, the Baltic Room and the Mirabeau Room now both feature a bhangra night, often playing Bollywood pop in addition to Punjabi folk jams.

The music centers on the heavy beat of the double-barreled drum called the dhol.
