Beyonce's parents are Matthew and Tina Knowles. With encouragement from her parents, Beyonce began performing by the age of seven and was soon winning local dancing and singing competitions. She formed an act called GirlTyme with Latavia Roberson in 1990. Matthew Knowles elected to manage the duo. Kelly Rowland joined the act and they landed an appearance on the Star Search talent competition. LeToya Luckett joined in 1993 and the group became Destiny's Child.

Beyonce is the first daughter of Mathew and Tina Knowles. Her name was a tribute to her Creole ancestry (her mother’s maiden name was Beyince). She was taking dance lessons and singing as a soloist in her church choir by age seven. Her dance teacher entered her in local talent competitions. She would win more than 30 such contests over the next few years. Together with childhood friends Latavia Roberson, Kelly Rowland and LeToya Tuckett, Beyonce started an all-girl singing group modeled on the Supremes and the Jackson Five.

Beyonce Knowles, arguably the most popular member of '90s powerhouse Destiny's Child, knew she wanted to be a star from an early age. As a child, she sang with her church choir and took dance lessons; she formed the first incarnation of Destiny's Child in 1990 -- when she was a mere 9 years old. By 2001, the highly successful trio began concentrating on solo projects. Knowles nabbed one of the lead roles in Mike Meyers' Austin Powers: Goldmember; an appearance in MTV's Carmen: A Hip Hopera cemented her reputation as a formidable entertainer in a variety of fields. Her solo debut, Dangerously in Love, came out in the summer of 2003. The first single, "Crazy in Love," was a duet with beau Jay-Z, and predictably zoomed to the top of the charts.
