In 1935 Grable began dating former child actor Jackie Coogan. The couple was married in 1937. Publicity surrounding the romance initially helped boost Grable's popularity, but their troubled marriage and divorce in 1939 took their toll on her career. Under contract at Paramount, she was dropped and seeing no other opportunities available took a job touring with Eddie ''Rochester'' Anderson's vaudeville show. When the tour ended she went to work for Jack Haley in a show he was producing in San Francisco.

In the summer of 1935, Betty married actor Jackie Coogan. The union of these two made Betty Grable a popular name. The couple was signed to a contract to appear in a touring show called "Hollywood Secrets." Betty’s career had a lot of bumps in it because the studios didn’t capitalize on her talents. The lack of publicity made it more difficult for this star to get anything above third billing in a show. Around 1939, her marriage was one of the bumps in the road as Jackie Coogan was in litigation to claim his share of his childhood earnings that he had been cheated out of.

More bits and indifferent supporting roles followed until Grable was signed by Paramount, who loaned her to 20th Century-Fox for Pigskin Parade (1936), which established her with the public. Grable finally landed top billing in Paramount's Million Dollar Legs (1939)--the title referred not to the star but to a college athletic team--which co-starred her first husband, Jackie Coogan.
