Elizabeth "Betty" Broderick is a cause celeb for womens groups as her case is viewed as all too common. Betty was married to Dan Broderick for many years and they struggled to make ends meet, always financially on the edge. Dan eventually got a law degree and got into a law practice where he did very well financially and the family seemed to be doing well. Betty was homemaker and Dan continued to earn enough to keep the family well cared for. Or so it seemed. Dan began to have an affair with a woman he met and eventually it led to a divorce in January of 1989.

Betty Broderick admitted to shooting her ex-husband and his new young wife as they slept in their bedroom. Her tearful testimony at her first trial portrayed her husband as a psychologically abusive cad who drove her to the edge of madness. She claimed she had intended to shoot herself, but as a last resort, decided to try and talk to her husband about returning custody of their children to her. Nearly hysterical on the stand, Broderick stated that she only remembered the gun going off once -- even though she emptied it into the couple. Then she ripped the phone out of the wall and fled in panic. A barrage of psychiatric experts corroborated the defense theory of a fragile, emotionally pathetic woman suffering from profound situational depression induced by her husband’s cruelty during a bitter and protracted divorce.

Betty Broderick first trial ended in a hung jury when two of the jurors held out for manslaughter instead of murder. Prosecutor Kerry Wells was more successful with the second trial. She was sentenced to two consecutive terms of 15 years to life plus two years for illegal use of a firearm. She is currently serving out her sentence at the Central California Women's Facility in Chowchilla, California, where she is known as prisoner W42477. She will have to serve a minimum of 21 years before being eligible for parole. Wikipedia
Betty Broderick was involved in numerous court cases both due to the double homicide she committed and for other reasons, too. William Eddy, noted therapist/mediator/lawyer, points to people with "High Conflict Personalities" such as Betty with her Borderline Personality Disorder as being involved in a disproportionate number of court cases clogging US courts.[2]
