Bette Davis was a two-time Academy Award-winning American actress of film, television and theatre. Ruth Elizabeth Davis, known from early childhood as "Betty", was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, to Harlow Morrell Davis and Ruth Augusta Favor; the family was of English, French, and Welsh ancestry. In 1915, Davis's parents separated and, in 1921, Ruth Davis moved to New York City with her daughters, where she worked as a photographer. Betty was inspired to become an actress after seeing Rudolph Valentino in The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1921) and Mary Pickford in Little Lord Fauntleroy (1921), and changed the spelling of her name to "Bette" after Honoré de Balzac's La Cousine Bette. She received encouragement from her mother, who had aspired to become an actress. She attended Cushing Academy, a finishing school in Ashburnham, Massachusetts where she met her future husband, Harmon "Ham" Nelson. In 1926, she saw a production of Henrik Ibsen's The Wild Duck with Blanche Yurka and Peg Entwistle.

Her Mother supported Bette and her sister by working as a portrait photographer. Bette attended several boarding schools and, in her teens, began calling herself Bette after Honor� de Balzac's nineteenth-century novel Cousin Bette. She acted in school plays and in semiprofessional stock productions and in the summer of 1925, studied interpretive dance at New Hampshire's Mariarden artists' colony. After graduating from Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, Massachusetts, in 1927, she studied acting in New York City at the John Murray AndersonRobert Milton School, where her dance teacher was Martha Graham.

Bette Davis has performed in several films and is widely remembered for her unfamiliar roles in various film genres such as historical and crime films and occasionally appeared on comical roles. However she excelled in the roles of romantic characters in the romantic dramas. She started her career with the Broadway plays shifted to Hollywood in the 1930’s Her early movies for Universal Studios were great disasters. Later she established her career with Warner Brothers. Her major break came with ‘The Man Who Played God ‘ in which she was cast in the lead female role by George Arliss. After acting in as many as 20 films she was offered the role of the vicious Mildred Rogers in ‘Of Human Bondage ‘ the film version of Somerset Maugham’s much-acclaimed novel.

Bette Davis, an American movie actress known for portraying strong and complex characters, was born Ruth Elizabeth Davis in 1908 in Lowell, Massachusetts, USA. She studied drama in New York City at the Robert Milton-John Murray Anderson School of the Theater and made her Broadway debut by 1929. In 1930, she moved to Hollywood to make motion pictures. She was first under contract with Universal, but was fired after making the unsuccessful Bad Sister and she moved to Warner Brothers. In 1934, she received major acclaim for the movie Of Human Bondage. After this sucess, she started her long struggle with the studio to obtain stronger parts in future movies.
