Bette Davis was also the first female president of the Academy of Motion Picture arts and sciences. She turned out to be the first woman recipient of Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute. In her personal life she was married four times, once widowed and thrice divorced and was a single mother. She had usual ups and downs in her career and entered into legal battles quite a few times. However, she recovered from her declining career and started afresh with new releases in the 1970’s.

The elder daughter of Harlow Morrell, a lawyer, and Ruth (Favor) Davis, she was christened Ruth Elizabeth, but was called Bette as a child and kept the name throughout her career. Davis was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, on April 5, 1908. After her parents divorced in 1916, she and her sister Barbara moved frequently throughout New England while their mother pursued a photography career.

Bette's personal life wasn't always as successful as her film career. Her daughter, B. D. Hyman, wrote two tell-all books about her mother's destructive behavior that led to the pair's estrangement. Davis told her own story in several books, one of which responded to her daughter's charges. Bette had many health problems later in life, including a stroke. Bette died on on October 6, 1989 from breast cancer in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France. She is buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles.
