The reflex association with golf whenever the Bethpage State Park is mentioned is misplaced. There are many other sports and games for people to enjoy in the fresh and youthful atmosphere of this delightful stretch of manicured grass, flowering shrubs and stately trees. Handicap access to the polo field is a typical example of the care that State Park authorities have taken to ensure that everyone can enjoy refreshing interludes of fun in their lives. The Bethpage State Park is there just for you, whether you are a cross-country skiing fanatic or just a picnic potato! There are plenty of courts with all kinds of surfaces, where you can indulge in tennis and the common ball games, or perhaps invent one of your own!

Bethpage State Park was the site of the 2002 U.S. Open was among Golf Digest's 100 Greatest Courses in 2005 for their Black Course. There are five courses offered to golfers, the earliest dating back to 1932. There is ... a Golf Pro Shop and driving range. Other public golf courses near Bethpage with a cheap car rental include Catiague, Oyster Bay, and Peninsula.

Until the late 1600's, the land on which Bethpage State Park now stands was under the stewardship of the Marsapequa, Matinecoc and Secatogue tribes of the Delaware Branch of the Algonkian Nation. In 1687, Englishman, Thomas Powell, purchased nearly 15 square miles of land, including the current parklands, from these Native American proprietors for £140 (British pound sterling). Eight years later, October 18, 1695, Mawmee, William Chepy, Seurushung, Sascenin, Ruumpass and Wamussum made their marks on the sheepskin deed. Historians believe that Powell, a devout Quaker, named his new landholdings Bethpage by taking the name from a biblical reference in the book of St. Matthew.

Recreation - Bethpage State Park offers world-class golf on 5 separate courses. The Black Course offers 7,295 yards and par 71. The other 4 courses have yardage of over 6,000. Each of the 5 courses has a clubhouse, club rental, pro shop and driving range. The Black and Green Courses do NOT offer power carts. Fees vary per course; call park for details: 516-249-0700.

Formerly the Lenox Hills Country Club, the land was purchased by the state and Bethpage State Park was created in the 1930s. Three of the park's courses were designed by A. W. Tillinghast, including the Black Course. When the 2002 U.S. Open was played at Bethpage, it marked the first time the championship ever had been played on a municipal facility. When Phil Mickelson made a birdie putt here on Saturday of the 2002 U.S. Open, it set off a roar from the gallery rarely equaled in major championship golf. The five courses at Bethpage State Park were created as a W.P.A. project during the Depression of the 1930s. Over 1800 workers transformed 1475 acres of rolling woodlands into a parkland devoted to recreation with picnic areas, playing fields, horse trails and tennis courts in addition to the five golf courses. A.W. Tillinghast, who has designed some of America's greatest golf courses, designed three of the courses at Bethpage. Bethpage Black was the final course he designed in his luminous career.
