Through Gamma Beta Phi the tremendous potential of the most intelligent, highly-motivated and well-intentioned students can be coordinated and directed into beneficial service. The Society’s service aspect is just as important as that of honor. All possible help and encouragement is given to the chapter and its leaders in this regard. Gamma Beta Phi’s major service effort is devoted to projects that foster, disseminate and improve education. Perhaps the greatest appeal of the Society for students is the opportunity to perform community and educational service and at the same time be recognized for academic excellence.

Beta particles are just electrons from the nucleus, the term "beta particle" being an historical term used in the early description of radioactivity. The high energy electrons have greater range of penetration than alpha particles, but still much less than gamma rays. The radiation hazard from betas is greatest if they are ingested.

To give chapter leaders some ideas of possible service projects, ideas have been developed from reports of projects done by Gamma Beta Phi chapters. Projects are ... discussed at each state and national convention. It is doubtful that any other campus honor society, or service organization, even approaches the level of activity and accomplishments of the majority of Gamma Beta Phi chapters.

Beta particle emission occurs when the ratio of neutrons to protons in the nucleus is too high. In this case, an excess neutron transforms into a proton and an electron. The proton stays in the nucleus and the electron is ejected energetically.

To estimate Beta, one needs a list of returns for the asset and returns for the index; these returns can be daily, weekly or any period. Next, a plot should be made, with the index returns on the x-axis and the asset returns on the y-axis, in order to check that there are no serious violations of the linear regression model assumptions. The slope of the fitted line from the linear least-squares calculation is the estimated Beta. The y-intercept is the alpha.
