[I]n 1966 a Soviet official waited upon the Mayor of Berwick, Councillor Robert Knox, and a peace treaty was formally signed. Mr Knox is reputed to have said "Please tell the Russian people that they can sleep peacefully in their beds." To complicate the issue, some have noted that Knox did not have any authority with regard to foreign relations, and ... may have exceeded his powers as mayor in concluding a peace treaty. The whole curious scenario was the focus of a question on the third series of the gameshow QI.
Berwick is a former township located on a hill 45 kilometres south-east of the Melbourne CBD. It was later declared a city but has recently been incorporated into the City of Casey which includes Berwick, Harkaway, Narre Warren, Hallam, Doveton, Endeavour Hills, Lysterfield South, Hampton Park, Lyndhurst, Cranbourne, Clyde, Devon Meadows, Pearcedale, Cannons Creek, Warneet, Blind Bight and Tooradin. Although it has experienced fairly rapid development in recent years Berwick, with its old-fashioned library building, prim gardens and distinctive boulevarde, retains something of its 19th-century English village feel.

In physical appearance Berwick was tall and impressive, and he had a clear and distinctive voice. He had many highly individual traits of character, and his conversation, even on the most commonplace subjects, had a pungent forthrightness which often startled his hearers. The workings of his mind continually took the most unexpected and original turns, which were a source of stimulation and delight to his friends. All those who appreciated the valuable qualities which lay behind his somewhat abrupt and reserved manner held him in high esteem.
John Knox who had strong connections with the town Berwick-Upon-Tweed, the former county town of Berwickshire, has a population of 11,665 at the time of the United Kingdom Census 2001. The wider Borough of Berwick-upon-Tweed has a population of 25,949. There is consideration in Berwick about the possibility of breaking up the borough council to return to being a parish again. [2]
Berwick City Hall In past decades, Berwick was famous as the original home of the American Car and Foundry Company. Maker of train and subway cars, AC&F ... manufactured military tanks during World War II. As a mammoth operation deep in the heart of the borough, AC&F employed thousands of local citizens before it ceased operations in 1961. AC&F’s location is now home to an industrial complex that boasts 14 manufacturers. Their products range from microelectronic components to industrial starches, from PVC pipe made from recycled plastic to fashionable sweaters, from manufactured homes and hotels to truck chasses.

The railway to Berwick opened in 1877, ending the coach-service era, but greatly facilitating the marketing of local produce and hence the growth of the area. Other proximate localities which benefited from the establishment of local railway stations were Beaconsfield (allegedly named after British prime minister Benjamin Disraeli whose title was the Earl of Beaconsfield) and Narre Warren. Both Beaconsfield and Upper Beaconsfield became popular holiday resorts after the arrival of the railways. Gold had been discovered at Upper Beaconsfield in the 1870s but returns were slight and the diggings soon abandoned.
