built 615 days ago
Bertrand Russell Bertrand Russell, British philosopher, logician, essayist, and social critic, best known for his work in mathematical logic and analytic philosophy, is the twentieth century’s most important thinker. Many consider him to be the greatest philosopher of the twentieth century. He was born into an aristocratic family in 1872 at the zenith of Britain’s economic and political dominance, and died in 1970 when Britain’s power had been obscured in fairy tales subsequent to world wars. John Stuart Mill was his godfather. He was one of the world’s most influential critics of nuclear weapons and the American war in Vietnam.
Bertrand Russell was a British mathematician and philosopher who, along with A.N. Whitehead, wrote Principia Mathematica in 1903. This work was an important landmark in the development of logic and the philosophy of mathematics in the 20th century. In it, Russell and Whitehead demonstrated that mathematics can be expressed via a few terms of general logic and that numbers can be defined as classes.

Continuing a family tradition in political affairs, he was a prominent liberal as well as a socialist and anti-war activist for most of his long life. Millions looked up to Russell as a prophet of the creative and rational life.

At the age of three he was left an orphan. His father had wished him to be brought up as an agnostic; to avoid this he was made a ward of Court, and brought up by his grandmother. Instead of being sent to school he was taught by governesses and tutors, and ... acquired a perfect knowledge of French and German. In 1890 he went into residence at Trinity College, Cambridge, and after being a very high Wrangler and obtaining a First Class with distinction in philosophy he was elected a fellow of his college in 1895.

Millions looked up to Russell as a sort of prophet of the creative and rational life. He was born in 1872, at the height of Britain's economic and political ascendancy, and died in 1970 when Britain's empire had all but vanished and her power had been drained in two victorious but debilitating world wars. At his death... his voice still carried moral authority, for he was one of the world's most influential critics of nuclear weapons and the American war in Vietnam.
