Bernhard Langer: Ryder Cup
built 646 days ago
Langer has made ten appearances in The Ryder Cup, just one behind Nick Faldo's record. He has played on five winning teams ? in 1985, 1987, 1995, 1997 and 2002 ? and his individual contribution is exceptional. From a total of 42 ties, Langer has won 21, halved six and lost 15.

German BERNHARD LANGER has been one of the world's leading golf professionals for more than 20 years. In that time he has been ranked European and World Number One,and has won countless tournaments including the Masters in 1985 and 1993. He was easily the most experienced player in Europe's winning 2002 Ryder Cup team; his selection was a mark of his remarkable recent return to form, having been left out of the previous team in 1999.

Langer played in five successful Ryder Cup Teams (1985, 1987, 1995, 1997, 2002) and won exactly 50 per cent of his 42 ties, halving six and losing 15. He was part of Jacklin's successful side which regained The Ryder Cup in 1985 after an absence of 28 years and two years later, played a key role in helping Europe win the trophy on American soil for the first time.

Langer turned professional in 1972 and has won many events in Europe and the United States , among them The Masters in 1985 and 1993. He was the inaugural World Number 1 when the Official World Golf Rankings were introduced in 1986, and he became a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2001. He was non-playing captain of the victorious European Ryder Cup team in 2004 .

Forget for a moment that Langer is likely to be succeeded as captain by another of the European Tour's senior citizens (the favorite at the moment, incidentally, seems to be Ian Woosnam). By the time the 2006 bun-fight gets under way, the saintly German will be 49, which would make him the oldest European Ryder Cup player of the modern era.

With a European Ryder Cup record second only to that of the great Nick Faldo, Langer remains to this day one of the most admired and respected players the game of golf has produced. It was only a matter of time before Langer's leadership skills were rewarded and Langer was appointed Ryder Cup Captain for the 2004 event at Oakland Hills, Michigan.
