Berlin is one of the most important publishing cities in Germany and even leads the nation in fiction, science, and educational publishing. The capital is home to 500 printing presses and boasts 150 companies specializing in the processing of printed material, including bookbinding and special embossment. With 8,400 first editions (2005), Berlin ranks second of all publishing cities in Germany. The capital produces 11 daily newspapers, 3 Sunday papers, 10 city magazines, 7 advertising papers, 6 weekly papers, as well as a wide variety of regional and national magazines and tender papers. There are roughly 13,200 people working in the print industry in Berlin, which last year recorded a turnover of 3.8 million euro.

Berlin has a rich art scene, and it is home to hundreds of art galleries. The city is host to the Art Forum annual international art fair. Many young Germans and international artists continue to settle in the city, and Berlin has established itself as an important center of youth and popular culture in Europe. Signs of this expanding role were the 2003 announcement that the annual Popkomm, Europe's largest music industry convention, would move to Berlin after 15 years in Cologne. Shortly thereafter, MTV ... decided to move its German headquarters and main studios from Munich to Berlin. Universal Music Group opened its European headquarters on the banks of the River Spree in an area known as the mediaspree.

Berlin has a temperate/mesothermal climate (Cfb) according to the Köppen climate classification system. The mean annual temperature for Berlin-Dahlem (a location within Steglitz-Zehlendorf) is 9.4 °C (48.9 °F) and its mean annual precipitation totals 578 millimeters (22.8 in). The warmest months are June, July, and August, with mean temperatures of 16.7 to 17.9 °C (62.1 to 64.2 °F). The coldest are December, January, and February, with mean temperatures of −0.4 to 1.2 °C (31.3 to 34.2 °F).[25] Berlin's built-up area creates a microclimate, with heat stored by the city's buildings. Temperatures can be 4 °C (7.2 °F) higher in the city than in the surrounding areas.

A happy hour drink in Berlin may now leave you with a baby hangover, as tiny Berliners flood smoke-free bars and restaurants in the city's more fertile neighborhoods. Already on January 2, sitting in a café with a pregnant friend, there was a notable number of babies stopping by, ordering lattés, and flirting with the waitresses. Most were hanging out with grinning fathers, who were happily drinking pilsner and playing patty cake. All in all, they looked as if 2008 and the cigarette ban in bars and restaurants had given them a new lease on life. Sixty years after World War II, the city of Berlin unveiled its monument to the Jewish victims of the crimes of the Third Reich. An international symbol of German atrocities, this controversial Holocaust memorial, located next to the Brandenburger Tor and near the buried remains of Hitler's undergeround bunker, was more than 15 years in the making. Designed by U.S. architect Peter Eisenman, the memorial's grid of 2,711 gray concrete slabs covers a vast area in the heart of Berlin. The slabs, or stelae, stand at varied heights of up to 15 feet, creating the sense of a stark concrete forest, through which visitors can wander on uneven cobblestone pathways. The memorial has sparked fierce discussion and controversy. Critcs argue that the abstract design and the failure to acknowledge the Third Reich's other, non-Jewish victims might alienate visitors to the multi-million dollar project.
