The Berlin Wall has long since disappeared from reunified Berlin. Memories of the Wall... are still very much alive, and many of the visitors who come from all over the world are disappointed or surprised to find that so little remains of Berlin’s most infamous structure. The two halves of the city, separated for decades, have in fact been visibly reunited, while the remaining sections of the GDR’s border fortifications no longer inspire fear. A South Korean artist has installed a fluorescent plastic copy of the Berlin Wall in front of the city's historic gate in protest of the enduring division of the Korean peninsula. But for many visitors interested in the history of the once-divided city, the display is just another piece of chic artwork in the vibrant German capital, and not much more.

On public streets and places, the run of removed parts of the front wall is marked by double cobblestone rows and copper strips throughout Berlin. At some places like Potsdamer Platz, segments removed at other parts of the Wall serve the same purpose.

On February 1997, a red line was painted on the pavement at the former "Checkpoint Charlie" to mark the course of the former Berlin wall. This line shall reach a length of 20 km and shall be replaced by two rows of paving stones.
