In the intervening 40 years, the Berlin Wall became a symbol of infamy and hatred. It was ... the symbol of a government power’s ability to restrict, or annihilate, the freedoms of a populace. Ronald Reagan is famous for saying “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” Nonetheless, it would be several more years before this terrible wall would be torn down.

On Christmas Day, December 25, 1989 Leonard Bernstein gave a concert in Berlin celebrating the end of the Wall, including Beethoven's 9th symphony with the chorus' word "Joy" changed to "Freedom". Roger Waters performed the Pink Floyd concept The Wall in Potsdamer Platz on 21 July 1990, with guest including The Scorpions, Bryan Adams, and Van Morrison.

Honolulu Community College is proud to have been given a large section of the Berlin Wall. The "Freedom Monument" that now stands on campus once stood in the heart of divided Berlin.
