Berlin Wall: East Germany
built 656 days ago
Berlin Wall The Berlin Wall has been mainly demolished, and rightly so as the city has moved on rapidly since those days. To see a 700m stretch of it, visit Eastside Gallery. The parts in Potsdamer Platz are a bit touristy.

Another image of the wall The East Berlin people who guarded the wall (a special police corps), had the order to shoot if this was necessary to stop people fleeing. East German leaders such as Egon Krenz were arrested after German Reunification because guards were orderd to shoot to kill.[1]
Almost all of the remaining sections of Berlin Wall were rapidly chipped away. Photo December 1990. On December 25, 1989 Leonard Bernstein gave a concert in Berlin celebrating the end of the Wall, including Beethoven's 9th symphony ( Ode to Joy) with the chorus' word "Joy" (Freude) changed to "Freedom" (Freiheit). Roger Waters performed the Pink Floyd album The Wall in Potsdamer Platz on 21 July 1990, with guests including the Scorpions, Bryan Adams, and Van Morrison. David Hasselhoff performed his song "Looking for Freedom", which was very popular in Germany at that time, standing on the Berlin wall.
The history of the Berlin wall can be traced back to the era following the blockade by the Soviet forces into Berlin, during the period between June 1948 and May 1949. This particular event characterizes the history in Germany.
A rear wall („Hinterlandmauer“ or „Hinterlandsicherungsmauer“) or a rear fence secured the „death strip“ on the East Berlin side. The rear wall was usually smaller than the front wall. However, remaining stretches of the rear wall are often mistaken for front wall sections where they have the same height and outlook (e.g. at Potsdamer Platz and at Mühlenstraße). Shorter and longer segments of the rear wall remain in place throughout Berlin, by far the longest and most prominent forming the 1,300 meters long „East Side Gallery“ at Mühlenstraße.
IG Metall, Germany's biggest industrial union, argues that it is time for eastern workers to have equal conditions, 13 years after Germany reunited following the fall of the Berlin Wall. Easterners work longer hours for the same base pay. But the union argues that manufacturers in the east are now competitive enough to afford having workers spend less time on the job for the same pay, and says a shorter week would spread available work among more people. With joblessness in the east at nearly 19% - more than double the rate in the east - employers say the longer hours help east Germany attract investment....
