built 652 days ago
With 42,500 students in approximately 100 different programs of study, 3,500 graduates and 1,000 doctoral candidates each year, FU Berlin is the largest university in Germany's capital, and one of the largest in the nation. The university's research activities in the Humanities and in the Social and Natural Sciences are distinguished by their international orientation, as well as by the interdisciplinary and collaborative character of work carried out by a number of research networks: FU Berlin's twelve Collaborative Research Centers, seven Research Training Centers, five DFG Research Units and the participation in a DFG Research Center are ample evidence of this. Today, about 490 professors, almost 90 of them in Medicine and Dentistry, are engaged in teaching and in research at the Freie Universitat. http://www.fu-berlin.de

During the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) Berlin at first benefited from Brandenburg's neutrality, but after 1631 it had to provide quarters for several Swedish armies, which ... exacted heavy contributions. Starvation, new outbreaks of plague, and arson and robberies further impoverished the town and depopulated it by half.
With its rich history, Berlin was born several times, and the last one after the end of Cold War. You could spend weeks there, trying to get a glimpse at all the jewels scattered throughout this ever-changing city, pearls of its past, architecture, wellbeing and fun...But - if you're on a short haul of time - we selected some just for you. The best advice is to start from Potsdamer Platz. Once one of the busiest squares of Europe, Potsdamer Square was heavily destroyed during 2WW and - during Cold War - became a forgotten place, divided and scarred by the Berlin wall. Today, it has regained the splendour it once had, being considered the center of the city. The Sony Center with its peculiar structure, can be noticed from the square, and it surely is worth a visit, with its several shops, restaurants, coffees and movie theatres.
