The main monster in the story of Beowulf is Grendel. That is capitalized as though it is a proper name like Fido or Black Beauty. But it was a species of serpent. People spoke of grendels pond or grendels pit or grendels wood, naming them according to where they lived. Grendel in the story was a grendel mere because he lived in a large brackish pond full of coarse ferns. He probably had a loud, deep-throated growl.

Spark Notes: "The protagonist of the epic, Beowulf is a Geatish hero who fights the monster Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and a fire-breathing dragon. Beowulf’s boasts and encounters reveal him to be the strongest, ablest warrior around. In his youth, he personifies all of the best values of the heroic culture. In his old age, he proves a wise and effective ruler."

A lot of early Beowulf scholarship centered around the poem’s language, its time, and its history. That changed with a lecture delivered before the British Academy on November 25, 1936, by J.R.R. Tolkien. In addition to being inspired by Beowulf and other medieval epics when writing The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings Tolkien was one of few scholars to consider the epic as literature. He considered it great literature, and helped give the poem a place in the literary canon. Tolkien asked critics–whom he considered the real monsters–to enjoy Beowulf as a work of literature, warning that, “myth is alive at once and in all its parts and dies before it can be dissected”.

Anyways, Beowulf shows up and brags about the sea monsters he’s killed. Big deal. Plenty of guys wake up every morning and “defeat†a few “sea monsters.†Then they flush them. (But seriously, folks, you’ve been a great audience) Beowulf ... loves to shout his name, loudly, a la Matt Damon in Team America. Hrothgar’s people love the B-dawg, save Unferth, a warrior who lilts around Heorot doing his best James Lipton impression. He’s played by John Malkovich, who used to be talented.

Beowulf liked adventure more than ruling the land. A band of warriors adventured with Beowulf. In those days warriors often vowed loyalty to their lord, or leader, and a group trusted and respected each other and risked their lives for each other. They shared the plunder they gained through victories. Beowulf with his band of warriors fought and killed monster animals.

Beowulf & Grendel is a 2005 film starring Gerard Butler and Ingvar Sigurdsson as the two title characters. The title change is apropos, as the film centers on the actual relationship between the hero and the monster, which doesn’t exist in the poem.
