Franklin was one of the first to discover that storms tend to move from west to east, and he made some of the first- recorded weather forecasts in his Poor Richard's Almanack. He ... charted the Gulf Stream in detail and developed Daylight Savings Time.

I[N] 1733, Franklin began the publication of Poor Richard's Almanack, which soon became a best seller and brought him fame throughout the world. It was no longer necessary for him to be a vegetarian in order to save a few pennies, but Franklin had found a philosophy which eschewed warm-blooded foods, and he continued the diet to which he had become accustomed.

Franklin's publications reflected his democratic spirit and so were popular in format and content. Poor Richard's Almanac consisted of stories about a fictional "Poor Richard" whose trials and tribulations provided an ideal context in which Franklin could advise readers on politics, philosophy, and how to get ahead in the world.

It is in this vein that he presents the autobiography of Benjamin Franklin. The autobiography is written in updated, modern language, and each chapter contains two sidebars: one, an insight from McCormick showing how Franklin’s writings pertain to modern business, and two, a “proverb” from one of Franklin’s alter egos, “Poor” Richard Saunders. While Franklin’s writing is very personable, and, in updated form, very enjoyable, the sidebars do much to contextualize the writing and leave the reader with something more to ponder.
