Franklin image Benjamin Franklin is one of the greatest Americans in history. He contributed to society in almost every aspect. He was a writer, printer, newsman, publisher, editor, civic leader, inventor, scientist, philosopher, musician, patriot, statesman, and diplomat. Franklin was the only person who signed all four key documents which led to the formation of the United States of America: The Declaration of Independence, The Treaty of Alliance with France, The Treaty of Paris, and The Constitution of the United States. His story proves that with determination and dedication, success is within anyone's grasp. A leading American statesman, inventor, philanthropist, publisher, revolutionary, and thinker, Benjamin Franklin was truly the Enlightened American.
Benjamin Franklin by Jean Baptiste Greuze (1777) Before the American Revolution, Benjamin Franklin was a frequent visitor to England. He was a member of the Lunar Society based in Birmingham, creators of the Industrial Revolution, and ... the Hellfire Club of Sir Francis Dashwood.
Although Benjamin Franklin had little formal education, he was an avid reader and writer. At twelve he was apprenticed to his brother James, a printer, who published a weekly magazine called The Spectator. At seventeen Franklin moved to Philadelphia and quickly opened his own print shop and started publishing.
Benjamin Franklin's work in the field of electricity has proven vital to both society and the sciences. In his discoveries of electricity and lightning, the scientist at once realized the awesome power and current contained in each lightning bolt. In order to protect buildings and homes, he invented a lightning rod, comprised of iron, which would be mounted at the top of the edifice. Subsequently, it would attract the lightning current and immediately channel it to the ground, thereby rendering it harmless. Scientists during Franklin's time praised the invention for its practicality and dramatic purpose.
The last major undertaking in which James Logan and Benjamin Franklin collaborated was the founding of a college in Philadelphia, now the University of Pennsylvania. James Logan was an old man disabled by stroke and illness when Franklin's proposal was circulated. His protégé was just coming into his own. Franklin hoped to persuade this former son of a schoolmaster and founder of one of the most extensive private libraries in North America to lend his support to the new college forming in Philadelphia. Logan reluctantly agreed to serve as an Academy trustee. The significance of this gesture, – endorsement from the colony's most learned and respected elder statesman, – was not lost on Franklin.
