The famous depiction of Franklin flying a kite in a thunderstorm represents much work he undertook with respect to lightning. He told Collinson that lightning is identical with what was being produced by his machines and he advocated earthed pointed rods on high buildings in order to ‘draw electrical fire’ harmlessly. The Church... saw lightning as God’s punishment of sinners, so refusals to use such rods were common. The large European cathedrals regularly experienced many thousands of casualties when bell ringers were electrocuted and gunpowder, commonly stored in crypts, exploded. Even more distress was common in America, where storms were often fiercer. Some people thought that earthed lightning would cause earthquakes and some thought that blunt rather than pointed rods should be used.

There is nothing special about this side of Franklin. His distinctive contribution is not found in his lectures on the more conventional virtues but in his openness to the new, entrepreneurial, can-do spirit. He lambasted privileged public offices and aristocracies of birth, and told European immigrants that "in America, people do not inquire concerning a stranger, What is he? but What can he do?"29
Franklin, a Friend, did not possess a shred of hypocrisy in his nature. He was himself, and because of this people first trusted him and then loved him. Even while in Paris on his most important mission, a mission upon the success of which depended the freedom of the new nation, he refused to do “as others do” in order to win their favor.

Franklin began his essay by noting that the Conestogas, a dying remnant of the Iroquois confederacy, had been surrounded by frontier settlements, and had dwindled to twenty people, "viz. 7 Men, 5 Women and 8 Children, Boys and Girls, living in Friendship with their White Neighbors, who love them for their peaceable inoffensive Behavior."

According to McCormick's Franklin, "Wrongdoing is not harmful to yourself and others because it's forbidden; it's forbidden because it's harmful. As such, it's in everybody's best interest to live a virtuous life if they want to be happy and successful. This is the way the world works. The young people reading this should take special note: nothing will make a person's fortune like simple goodness and honesty."
Ben invented the Franklin Stove, an iron furnace that allowed people to heat their homes safely while using less wood. He discovered the conductivity of heat by color and established the first volunteer fire-fighting union and fire insurance company in Philadelphia.
