Benito Mussolini (July 29, 1883 - April 28, 1945) was the dictator of Italy from 1922 until 1943. He began his own political movement, known as Fascism, in 1914. Mussolini wanted to revive the might of ancient Rome in the modern world. The Fascist Party proclaimed the absolute authority of the nation over everything else. It held nationalism, militarism, physical fitness and anti-liberalism in high esteem. Mussolini's slogan "to believe, to obey, to combat" symbolized the all-powerful dictatorship that defines a fascist state.

Benito Mussolini worked with D'Annunzio and was much influenced by him. Mussolini was aware of D'Annunzio's Charter of Carnaro for his Regency of Carnaro in the city of Fiume. Mussolini was familiar with films and with D'Annunzio's work in the film Cabiria. From 1914 to 1919 (and before), and during the time that Mussolini found and acquired the socialist salute, Mussolini (1883-1945) was a self-described socialist, a well-known socialist leader who was respected among socialists at that time (that time when he found his socialist salute). Between 1912 and 1914, Mussolini was the editor of the Socialist Party newspaper, "L'Avanti." In 1914 he started his own socialist newspaper "Il Popolo d'Italia" ("The people of Italy"). He was a staunch proponent of revolutionary rather than reformist socialism, and actually received Lenin's endorsement and support for expelling reformists from the Socialist Party. He was in fact first dubbed "Il Duce" (the Leader) when he was a member of Italy's (Marxist) Socialist Party.

Benito Mussolini was born at Dovia di Predappio, Italy, on July 29, 1883. The Mussolinis were a poor family who lived in a crowded two-bedroom apartment. His father was a blacksmith and a follower of socialism (a system providing for the sharing of land and goods equally among all people); his mother taught elementary school. Benito, although intelligent, was violent and had a large ego. He was a poor student at school and learned very little. As a student at a boarding school in Faenza, Italy, Mussolini stabbed another student, and as a result he was expelled.

Benito Mussolini would be called for military service, but in 1917 he was wounded and returned home to continue to edit his newspaper. Mussolini would not fare well in the elections of 1919 but he would enter parliament in 1921. The Fasciti would work to form squads of armed war veterans that they called squadritsi whose job it was to terrorize individuals that were anarchists, socialists, and communists or those associated with them. By October of 1922 Mussolini was asked by Vittorio Emanuele III to create a new government which would make him the youngest Premier in Italy at the age of 39. The reason that Emmanuel III chose Mussolini is he was well aware that if he did not choose a government under the Fascist party that Italy would be headed toward civil war.
