On April 28, 1945, just before the Allied armies reached Milan, Mussolini, along with his mistress Claretta Petacci, was caught by Italian partisans as he headed for Chiavenna to board a plane for escape to Switzerland. They were both shot on the spot along with their sixteen-man escort. The next day the bodies were hung in Piazzale Loreto (Milan) along with those of other fascists to be abused by the crowds. Mussolini's body was then taken to Predappio and the family chapel.

On April 27, 1945 Mussolini and his mistress were captured by Italian communist partisans as they were attempting to flee to Switzerland. On April 29, 1945 both Mussolini and his mistress were executed. There had not been a plan to execute his mistress, but she refused to let go of Benito Mussolini. The bodies of Mussolini and his mistress were hung from the feet in Milan to prove to the people that Benito Mussolini truly was dead. The display of the body of Il Duce ... was an attempt to disuade other fascists to continue the fight or commit acts of revenge.

As a young boy, Benito was aggressive and considered a bully. He was kicked out of two schools for stabbing two fellow students with his penknife. Furthermore, when it was time for punishment, he would equally attack those of authority. As a part of Italy’s middle class, he wasn’t poor in the sense of the word, but his father’s escapades often kept the family in dire straights. However, even with all of these problems, Mussolini was seen as an intelligent kid who was able to obtain his teaching licensure. After a short stint teaching, he went to Switzerland where he became self-educated in the political philosophers of the day.
