Benito Mussolini: People

Mussolini was a real problem child. He got into so much trouble he was expelled and shipped off to another boarding school, the Royal Normal School at Forlimpopolo. This school was tolerant towards Mussolini. Here Mussolini learned his famous oration skills, skills that would later serve him well. He learned how to make great speeches that would really gather people and convince them.

Constantly onstage, Mussolini was able to gain the loyalty of his people by exuding an air of great self-confidence, or more appropriately, arrogance. The interesting fact is that many scholars believe that Mussolini had a terrible inferiority complex... everything that he did was geared toward maintaining control! He used all means at his disposal. Even his manner of dress commanded respect.

Silvio Berlusconi, the prime minister of Italy, claimed that Benito Mussolini's dictatorship was "much more benign" than Saddam Hussein's. "Mussolini did not murder anyone," he said. "Mussolini sent people on holiday to confine them."

Benito does not appear to be an intensely emotional or sentimental person, and he is often unaware of his own or other people's deeper feelings and emotional needs. Tears and tantrums bewilder him and make him very uncomfortable. Benito Mussolini would rather settle differences by talking things out reasonably and rationally, but he tends to ignore or poke fun at any attempt to probe his own or others' inner depths.
