The Italian dictator Benito Mussolini (1883-1945) was head of the Italian government from 1922 to 1943. A Fascist dictator, he led Italy into three sucessive wars, the last of which overturned his regime.

Benito Mussolini appears to stride through 20th-century Italian history like a buffoon, a fascist dictator whose ludicrous posing was dwarfed by the incalculably more sinister nature of Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime. In reality, as shown in Channel 4's The Real Mussolini – which includes an interview with veteran journalist Indro Montanelli, who died in July 2001 – the original fascist was a much more complex character.

In a way, Benito Mussolini filled a vacuum. Fascism emerged as a "third way" � as Italy's last hope to avoid imminent collapse of 'weak' Italian liberalism or communist revolution. While failing to outline a coherent program, it evolved into new political and economic system that combined corporatism, totalitarianism, nationalism, and anti-communism in a state designed to bind all classes together under a capitalist system, but a new capitalist system in which the state seized control of the organization of vital industries. The appeal of this movement, the promise of a more orderly capitalism during an era of interwar depression... was not isolated to Italy, or even Europe.

Benito Mussolini was born on July 29th, 1883 in a town of Varnano dei Costa. His mother was a teacher and his father was a blacksmith, and both were ardent socialists who raised him in their beliefs. As Mussolini grew up he became a writer. In 1913 he became a journalist for an Italian socialist paper called the Avanti. He became very well known among the socialists of his day. But Mussolini didn’t always take the party line.

Benito Amilcare Andrea Mussolini was born July 29, 1883 and died April 28, 1945. Mussolini was born in the north Italian town of Pergine Valsugana in the northern Italian province of Trento. His father was a cobbler and his mother a washerwoman. The Mussolinis were a relatively poor family in comparison with the majority of their neighbors and it is believed that Mussolini was ridiculed by his peers at Valsugana Elementary School due to his shabby clothes and dirty appearance. Many historians attribute Mussolini's aggressive nature to this mistreatment. His father was a socialist and raised Mussolini as a socialist.

Mussolini was born Benito Amilcare Andrea Mussolini. He was named Benito in honor of the Mexican reformist President Benito Juárez. The names Andrea and Amilcare were probaby for Italian socialists Andrea Costa and Amilcare Cipriani. It is believed that Mussolini's parents were members of the Socialist party. Rumor claims that they often encouraged their son to disobey governmental authority when he was a youth.
