Benito Mussolini: Father
built 636 days ago
Born in the midsized villaged of Predappio, Benito was born to his father who was a blacksmith and his mother who was a teacher. Mussolini was given the name Benito after a well known Mexican reformist President Benito Juarez. Mussolini would follow in the footsteps of his father and would become a socialist. As a young boy Mussolini was known as a trouble maker and by the age of eight he was forbidden to attend his mothers church and by the age of nine he had been expelled from school after stabbing another student and throwing an object at a teacher. Though he was a trouble maker, Mussolini was a bright student, earning good grades. Oddly enough, in 1901 Mussolini was qualified as a schoolmaster.
Mussolini, like his father before him, started out as a socialist who believed that his combination of the strictest politics would be best for Italy and even all of Europe. One aspect about Benito was his ability to captivate audiences, logically argue his standpoint, and somehow turn heads and change minds. He gained popularity and high regard in the most elite social circles of government. With violence backing his cause, he was able to forcefully debunk others’ counter arguments easily.
As soon as he was able to do so, Mussolini helped out his father in his forge. Working with his father gave the two time to talk. Alessandro was a socialist and a republican. He believed that there should be a fairer share of wealth in Italy and that the monarchy should be scrapped. Alessandro wanted the people to decide who should lead them. He did not accept a system whereby his son would automatically follow the king.
Mussolini was the first child of the local blacksmith. In later years he expressed pride in his humble origins and often spoke of himself as a "man of the people." The Mussolini family was, in fact, less humble than he alleged--his father, a part-time socialist journalist as well as a blacksmith, was the son of a lieutenant in the National Guard, and his mother was a schoolteacher--but the Mussolinis were certainly poor. They lived in two crowded rooms on the second floor of a small, decrepit palazzo; and, because the blacksmith spent much of his time discussing politics in taverns and most of his money on his mistress, the meals that were eaten by his three children were often meagre.

Why did Mussolini change his stance? It is possible that the influence of his father’s nationalism might have taken precedence over his socialism. But Mussolini, like many others in Europe, answered his country’s call when it was needed. In August 1915, Mussolini had been called up for military service.
In school Mussolini was very silent and kept to himself. He read books instead of playing with other kids. He got involved into many fights because he was violent tempered, just like his father. Once he even stabbed a student and was nearly expelled.
