Benazir Bhutto was the eldest child of the deposed Pakistani premier Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Begum Nusrat Bhutto, who was of Kurdish-Iranian origin. Her paternal grandfather was Sir Shah Nawaz Bhutto, a Sindhi and a key figure in Pakistan's Independence movement. Bhutto attended Lady Jennings Nursery School and then the Convent of Jesus and Mary in Karachi. After two years of schooling at the Rawalpindi Presentation Convent, she was sent to the Jesus and Mary Convent at Murree. She passed her O-level examinations at the age of 15. In April 1969, she was admitted to Harvard University's Radcliffe College.

On December 2, 1988, Benazir Bhutto was sworn in as prime minister of Pakistan, becoming the first woman to head the government of an Islamic state. Born in Karachi in 1953, she attended Harvard and Oxford Universities. Her father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, served as prime minister during the mid 1970s and was overthrown and executed in 1979. In the following period of political struggle, Bhutto spent nearly six years either in prison or under house arrest for her leadership of the then-opposition Pakistan People's Party. Bhutto's first period as prime minister ended in 1990. She returned to power in 1993 for three years.

The day Benazir Bhutto returned to Karachi after exile in 1986, Nazir Ahmad Baloch woke up early, pinned a button of Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party (PPP) to his shirt and danced out the door chanting "Long Live Bhutto." "He was crazy," says his aunt, Anipa Banno. "The party never did anything for him, but he believed in their slogan, 'Bread, Shelter and Clothes.' He was a party diehard." Bhutto had fled Pakistan when her father, former President and Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, was toppled in a military coup and later executed. But she went back to pick up her father's mantle as head of the PPP, and eventually led the party to election victory, becoming the world's first woman to head a modern Muslim nation. Like many in the sprawling slum city of Lyari, Baloch, though only a child, fell in love with the PPP when the elder Bhutto made it the centerpiece of his campaign to empower Pakistan's poor.
