Hundreds of thousands of people in Pakistan turned out peacefully to cheer their loyalty to Benazir Bhutto, 33-year-old daughter of Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who was overthrown and later executed by General Zia. Miss Bhutto arrived here this morning from a long self-imposed exile to proclaim herself heir to her father's once powerful political movement.

Later that year she returned to Pakistan where her father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, had been elected prime minister, but days after her arrival, the military seized power and her father was imprisoned. In 1979 he was hanged by the military government of General Zia Ul Haq.

From the age of 9, Bhutto was groomed by her father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, for political office in Pakistan. He introduced her to leading politicians of the day and made sure she was well educated.

General Muhammad Zia ul-Haq overthrew Bhutto's father, Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, in a 1977 military coup and went on to become president in 1978. His dictatorship ended when he was killed in a plane crash in 1988. The elder Bhutto, founder of the PPP, was hanged in 1979 after his conviction on charges of authorizing the murder of an opponent.
