Benazir Bhutto: Zulfikar Ali Bhutto
built 618 days ago
Benazir Bhutto's father, former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, was removed from office following a military coup in 1977 led by the then military chief General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq, who imposed martial law but promised to hold elections within three months. But later, instead of fulfilling the promise of holding general elections, General Zia charged Mr. Bhutto with conspiring to murder the father of dissident politician Ahmed Raza Kasuri. Mr. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was sentenced to death by the martial law court.

Benazir Bhutto was born on June 21, 1953, the eldest daughter of former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. He was Pakistan's first elected prime minister, known for his socialism and benevolence, promising to provide everyone with "roti, chapra and makan" (food, clothing, shelter).

That was the extreme makeover of Benazir Bhutto, as it has been for many of her subcontinent predecessors. India's Rajiv Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, Sri Lanka's Solomon Bandaranaike, Bangladesh's Mujibur Rahman and Ziaur Rahman, Benazir's own father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, back to Mahatma Gandhi himself -- many of South Asia's leaders have come to a fiery end. Almost 20 years after his death rumors still circulate about whether the plane crash that killed Pakistani strongman Zia ul-Haq was really an accident.

Bhutto's father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, served terms as Pakistan's president and prime minister in the 1970s. He was deposed in a military coup, convicted of ordering the murder of a political rival and hanged in 1979. His political party and his family have always maintained that he was falsely accused and tried on the orders of the coup leader, Gen. Zia-ul-Haq.

Despite the accusation being "widely doubted by the public",[12] and despite many clemency appeals from foreign leaders, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was hanged on April 4, 1979. Appeals for clemency were dismissed by acting President General Zia. Benazir Bhutto and her mother were held in a "police camp" until the end of May, after the execution.[13]
