Bhutto was an outspoken critic of Al Qaeda and other extremist Islamist groups. Consequently, Al Qaeda and other Islamist groups hated her for her rhetoric, for supporting secularism and for being a woman.

Ms. Bhutto’s marriage to Mr. Zardari was arranged by her mother, a fact that Ms. Bhutto has often said was easily explained, even for a modern, highly educated Pakistani woman. To be acceptable to the Pakistani public as a politician she could not be a single woman, and what was the difference, she would ask, between such a marriage and computer dating?

This is a tremedous loss for the Bhutto family, the people of Pakistan and all of humanity. She was a woman of remarkable strength, courage and beauty. May her family and all those who mourn her take comfort in the full and courageous life of sacrifice she led. She touched so many and is missed the world over.
