Benazir Bhutto: Return
built 229 days ago
Benazir Bhutto's return to Pakistan after eight years in self-imposed exile is being touted by her party as a promise of democracy and a better future for Pakistan. But not everyone is excited about her return.

Ultimately, leadership requires action: daring to take steps that are necessary but unpopular, challenging the status quo in order to reach a brighter future. Bhutto is a survivor and has an infinite belief in herself and her abilities. Rarely does she reveal even glimpses of her true character or her real thoughts. She may have genuinely not yet decided whether to return. Or she may have accepted that she can never return, but intends to leave the military on tenterhooks for as long as possible. Despite Musharraf's hostility, Bhutto's party is still the strongest political force in Pakistan and she is the only Pakistani politician with any natural charisma.
"Ms. Bhutto was a model of independence and courage for Muslim women around the world. After she was nearly killed upon her recent return to Pakistan, she could have taken a safe exit. Instead she chose to stand up and speak out despite the risks.

In 1984, Bhutto was allowed to return to the United Kingdom, where she became the party leader in exile. In late 1987, she married Asif Ali Zardari, the hereditary leader of an important Pakistani tribal group. The couple has three children.

Bhutto was well aware of the risk to her own life that might result from her return from exile to campaign for the leadership position. In an interview on September 28, 2007, with reporter Wolf Blitzer of CNN, she readily admitted the possibility of attack on herself.[76]
